A serious road accident occurred yesterday afternoon in Desenzano del Garda, involving a 65-year-old cyclist. The man was hit by a car at the San Martino roundabout, where the Brescia-Verona ring road intersects.
The exact details of the accident are still under investigation by the relevant authorities, but it appears that the cyclist was struck by the car while crossing the roundabout. As a result of the impact, the man fell off his bicycle and suffered severe injuries, landing on the asphalt after a six-meter fall.
The driver of the car immediately called for help, and an ambulance from the Red Cross and a doctor from the Desenzano hospital arrived at the scene. For nearly an hour, specialists attempted to resuscitate the injured man, who was in cardiac arrest. After over an hour, the cyclist began showing vital signs again, and the emergency response team decided to dispatch a helicopter from Papa Giovanni hospital in Bergamo to transfer the patient to the Civil hospital.
Currently, the cyclist is hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit and is in critical condition. His prognosis remains uncertain, and the next few hours will be crucial in assessing his clinical progress.
The carabinieri of the Radiomobile Unit of the Desenzano Company conducted investigations at the scene to determine responsibility. According to an initial reconstruction, the cyclist was returning home when he was hit by the car. It is hypothesized that the cause may have been the motorist’s failure to yield.
Due to the accident, the San Martino roundabout was closed to traffic to allow for rescue operations, the recovery of the vehicles involved, and investigations by the authorities. The traffic police also intervened to regulate traffic and prevent chaotic situations.
