The Rocca di Lonato del Garda will host a significant cultural event on Saturday, June 8th at 11:00 am, with a conference entitled “Piranesi the viewist through the eye of Gabriele Basilico: the Views of Rome.” This meeting, organized by the Ugo Da Como Foundation in collaboration with the Gabriele Basilico Archive, is part of the exhibition “PIRANESI | BASILICO. Views of Rome,” which runs until June 23rd.
The conference will feature the participation of Giovanna Calvenzi, companion and collaborator of photographer Gabriele Basilico, and art historian Alessandro Martoni, an expert on the works of Giambattista Piranesi. The debate will be recognized by the Order of Architects of Brescia and will offer training credits to participants.
Curated by Filippo Maggia, the exhibition is enjoying considerable success. It explores the charm of the Eternal City by comparing the historical engravings of Giovanni Battista Piranesi with the contemporary photographs taken by Gabriele Basilico. The exhibited works include both the famous collection of eighteenth-century etchings and the photographic reportages commissioned to Basilico in 1989 by the Swiss magazine DU.
The exhibition project takes inspiration from a commission received by Basilico in 2010 from the Cini Foundation in Venice, to reinterpret the Views of Rome through a modern lens. The exhibition currently set up in Lonato del Garda proposes a visual dialogue between the past and present of the Roman city.
The Ugo Da Como Foundation boasts five editions of Piranesi’s works, including the collection of the great Views of Rome printed in 1748. These are part of the Nocivelli collection, a precious bibliographic collection composed of over 400 volumes printed between the 15th and 20th centuries, donated by the Brescia entrepreneur Luigi Nocivelli.
The exhibition offers the public a selection of 32 views accompanied by two imposing photographs: the interior of the Colosseum and the view of the Arch of Septimius Severus with the pronaos of the Temple of Saturn. In addition, there is an extraordinary copy of the Campo Marzio (1762) preserved in the Nocivelli Collection.
The main aim of the exhibition is to introduce the public to the extraordinary library preserved in the Casa del Podestà of the Ugo Da Como Foundation, one of the most important private collections in Italy. At the same time, it aims to celebrate the photographic work of Gabriele Basilico, recognized worldwide as one of the leading urban photographers.
