Former commander of the local police in Sirmione, Roberto Toninelli, has been sentenced to one year and ten months of imprisonment with conditional suspension of the sentence. The sentence comes after the initial request from the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which had proposed two years of imprisonment.
Toninelli has been found guilty of stalking, threats, and illegal possession of a firearm. The charges were brought by his ex-partner, who was the municipal secretary at the time, and who reported a series of persecutory behaviors by Toninelli. According to what emerged during the trial, the former commander had sent numerous messages, made persistent calls, and repeatedly stalked the woman after the end of their three-year relationship. This relationship had also led Toninelli to leave his wife.
One of the most serious episodes concerns an alleged meeting at the woman’s house in Polpenazze. According to the complaint, Toninelli allegedly showed up armed with a loaded service pistol, threatening to kill both of them. However, the former commander has always denied this version of events, claiming instead that he had gone to the woman’s house with a gift in an attempt to mend their relationship.
In addition to the conditionally suspended custodial sentence, Toninelli will have to compensate the civil parties involved in the trial and cover the legal costs. Furthermore, he has been ordered to participate in a specific course on the prevention of gender-based violence; successful completion of the course could allow for a definitive suspension of the sentence.
