Lonato, September 7, 2024 – A new sinkhole has opened up in San Cipriano, between Lonato and Desenzano, above the high-speed train tunnel. The sinkhole, nearly one hundred meters wide and ten meters deep, required the intervention of trucks for ground restoration. This collapse is not an isolated incident: there were already ground subsidence issues in the same area in 2022 and 2023 due to the presence of groundwater, a problem that has been known for over twenty years.
The reactions have been immediate. Daniela Carassai from the Garda Environmental Table expressed concern over the management of aquifers following the construction of the high-speed train line, emphasizing that the morainic soil is permeable and rich in water. The WWF also called for thorough monitoring of the water resources affected by the construction of the tunnel, warning that nature can have significant consequences when it is disrupted.
