Lazise is celebrating the discovery of salicin, made two centuries ago by Francesco Fontana, a local pharmacist. On Saturday, November 9th, starting at 9:30 AM, a conference will be held at the historic Dogana Veneta to commemorate this significant anniversary. Salicin, extracted from the bark of the white willow and published by Fontana in 1824, is the precursor to aspirin. The event is organized by a cultural association dedicated to him and will feature experts who will delve into Fontana’s work and legacy.
The conference will be directed by Professor Giancarlo Volpato and will include discussions on various aspects of Fontana’s life, including his university studies and correspondence with other researchers of the time. Admission is free but requires prior reservation. This event not only pays tribute to Fontana’s figure but also serves as an important opportunity to reflect on the cultural and scientific contributions he made to the community of Lazise.
