In recent days, a new form of phone scam has emerged in the Lower Garda area, particularly affecting the regions of Desenzano, Sirmione, and Lonato. The Carabinieri of the Desenzano Command have reported that the criminals are employing a technique known as “Caller ID Spoofing” to disguise their identity, making real phone numbers appear on the recipients’ displays, often associated with institutions such as law enforcement or banks. In this scam, the perpetrators send messages regarding supposed bank transfers that need to be made, creating confusion and fear among citizens.
Reports of these scams have significantly increased, with around twenty cases recorded just in the last week. The Carabinieri advise against trusting these communications and recommend contacting the authorities directly to report any suspicious activity. It is crucial to remain vigilant against such frauds to prevent potential economic harm to the affected citizens.
