A print by Albrecht Dürer depicting the Last Supper, published in 1523, has recently been acquired by the Superintendency for Cultural Heritage and Activities of Trentino, thereby enriching the province’s cultural heritage. The presentation of the artwork took place in the presence of the Vice President of the Province and Cultural Affairs Assessor, Francesca Gerosa, who emphasized the significance of this acquisition in a notable year for the Buonconsiglio Castle Museum, where the print will be preserved and promoted.
The piece, a woodcut characterized by an unprecedented horizontal format, represents a pivotal moment in the sacred narrative: Christ announces to the apostles the betrayal of one among them. This example is particularly valuable as it likely belongs to one of the earliest printings. The acquisition not only reflects the Province’s commitment to preserving artistic heritage but also offers the public the opportunity to engage with Renaissance art through a significant piece of European art history.
