An important decision has been made regarding the purification of Lake Garda, with the announcement of a single facility in Lonato. This morning, Wednesday the 11th, the Deputy Minister of Environment and Energy Security, Vannia Gava, chaired a steering committee dedicated to the project, attended by various local and regional authorities. During the meeting, the status of the necessary interventions to decommission the underwater sewage pipes, deemed obsolete and potentially harmful to the lake’s ecosystem, was discussed.
The choice to develop a centralized purification system in the municipality of Lonato was preferred over the proposal to construct two facilities in the neighboring municipalities of Gavardo and Montichiari. According to the ministry’s announcement, this solution will ensure lower costs and greater operational efficiency. The timeline anticipates the removal of the pipes by 2030, with an initial investment of 100 million euros already allocated to ensure the protection of the lake, which accounts for 40% of Italy’s freshwater reserves.
