An art exhibition dedicated to cycling will open in Castiglione delle Stiviere at the Menghini Gallery on Saturday, April 13th. The exhibition, titled “Oh, how much road Bartali will have traveled…”, will showcase the works of talented local artist Oliviero Filippini.
Filippini, born in 1953 and a graduate of the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, has spent forty years of his career teaching “Pictorial Disciplines” at the Guidizzolo Art High School. This exhibition is a tribute to the city and its people, as well as a tribute to a special event related to the upcoming individual time trial stage of the Giro d’Italia, which will crown Castiglione delle Stiviere as the small capital of the Morenic Hills on May 18th.
The exhibition will present nineteen unpublished works that speak of cycling through Filippini’s postmodern and post-conceptual artistic language. His works represent a dynamic fusion between the bicycle and the cyclist hunched over the handlebars, creating a unique plastic form in which the curved lines characterize the construction of the entire form in relation to the surrounding landscape.
Filippini’s images embody the immediacy typical of the art of cycling. His palette uses bright and strong colors, with sparkling material inserts such as silver and gold. The quick and restless brushstroke, made up of rhythmically deposited touches, weaves light textures that are mitigated by the certainty of the drawing and precious surface elegances.
Filippini’s art brilliantly speaks of a sport that belongs to everyone. The exhibition also recalls that the bicycle has been a protagonist in the masterpieces of the greatest artists of the 20th century, such as Mario Sironi, Fortunato Depero, Picasso, Natalia Goncharova, Fernand Léger, and Salvador Dalí.
The exhibition “Oh, how much road Bartali will have traveled…” will be open to the public from April 13th to September 1st, 2024, at the Menghini Gallery. Opening hours will be on Fridays from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, and on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Admission is free.
