The Territory Defense Committee Quaderni of Valeggio sul Mincio recently met with the President of Veneto, Luca Zaia, to express their concerns regarding the potential establishment of asbestos disposal facilities in sensitive groundwater recharge areas. During the meeting on December 2nd, the Committee delivered a letter highlighting irregularities in the approval of the 2022 Waste Plan update, which introduced an exemption for the construction of asbestos landfills in previously protected areas. This issue has also garnered the interest and support of the Municipal Councils of neighboring towns, which have passed resolutions opposing such projects.
In response to the concerns raised by the Committee and various local authorities, the Regional Council has already requested the annulment of the exemption and the suspension of the procedures for landfills currently under evaluation. The matter has also been emphasized in relation to community directives aimed at preventing the pollution of water resources. The Committee is now awaiting a meeting with the Environmental Councillor, Gianpaolo Bottacin, hoping that President Zaia will also attend, to further discuss the necessary measures to protect the groundwater from asbestos contamination.
