A failed scam targeting an elderly woman was thwarted in recent hours on the Venetian Garda, thanks to the quick thinking of the victim and the prompt intervention of law enforcement. The incident occurred on the afternoon of Thursday, April 17, when the carabinieri of the operational unit of the NORM in Caprino Veronese arrested a 51-year-old Italian man, a resident of Naples and already known to the authorities, caught in the act while attempting to deceive a pensioner using the “fake police officer” technique. The man had contacted the elderly woman by phone, posing as a military officer and informing her of a supposed car accident involving her son, demanding a large sum of money or jewelry to be delivered to an alleged colleague.
However, the scammer’s plan failed as the elderly woman, suspicious of the story, remained calm and ended the conversation to contact emergency services at 112 under the pretext of checking her valuables. In the meantime, she prepared a package with items of little value to simulate the loot. When the criminal arrived to collect it, he was met by the carabinieri who arrested him.
