A new episode of fraud, fortunately thwarted, has affected the town of Padenghe sul Garda. The incident involves a 92-year-old woman who, thanks to her quick thinking and sharpness, managed to avoid the scam and alert the authorities.
On the morning of Friday, June 14th, an elderly resident of Padenghe received a phone call reporting a supposed car accident involving her grandson. The modus operandi of the scammers follows a well-known pattern in the Lake Garda area: after creating panic with the false news of the accident, the criminals show up at the victim’s door asking for money as compensation to “avoid legal issues.”
In this specific case, the woman immediately sensed something suspicious. Without succumbing to panic, she immediately contacted the Carabinieri of the Salò Company to report the incident. The officers promptly went to the 92-year-old’s house to assess the situation.
When the authorities arrived, the scammers were nowhere to be found. Probably realizing that their plan had been discovered, the criminals disappeared before the Carabinieri’s intervention. The woman’s effective reaction thus prevented yet another scam targeting the elderly in the Garda area.
Unfortunately, this attempt is part of a growing series of similar incidents reported in recent months along the shores of Lake Garda. The “fake accident” technique has become sadly frequent and continues to pose a threat, especially to the most vulnerable individuals.
