The Ministry of Health has confirmed the ban on fishing, selling, and consuming eels from Lake Garda, which has been in effect since 2011 due to contamination from PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). The decree, published in the Official Gazette and signed by Undersecretary Marcello Gemmato, specifies that the ban will continue until further provisions are based on the results of monitoring. These checks will be carried out by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Abruzzo and Molise and the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna.
The monitoring will be conducted according to a strategy defined in 2022 to verify any changes in contamination levels compared to the data collected between 2015 and 2016. The possibility of lifting the ban will depend on the results obtained, with particular attention to the morphological characteristics of the eels such as length or weight. In the meantime, the ban remains in effect based on recent analyses transmitted in December 2022.
