The issue of the ban on street performers in Desenzano has generated much discussion in the past five years and has resurfaced with the recent resolution published by the Municipality. The resolution provides for the suspension of “street artistic expressions from June 1, 2024, to January 15, 2025, with the exception of already granted authorizations,” particularly in the five designated areas of the historic center: Piazza Malvezzi, Piazza Matteotti, Piazza Cappelletti, Via Santa Maria, and Via Anelli.
According to the explanation given, this decision was made in order to propose high-quality tourist and cultural events, avoiding overlaps that could cause problems in terms of the quality of the cultural offering, as well as organizational and public order issues. The resolution states that other designated areas specified in the Regulation, such as Piazza Garibaldi, Rivoltella, and S. Martino, will remain active.
Criticism has been expressed, for example, by councilor Stefano Terzi, who commented: “The Desenzano administration proves to be even more obscurantist and incapable of planning. Street performers are banned in the center of Desenzano throughout the year, even during the low season. Heaven forbid that some artists want to keep the center lively for free. Should we expect exciting surprises from now until January or, as I fear, a center increasingly devoid of attraction, especially during the low season?!”
