Sixteen mayors from the Brescia area have filed a complaint with the Court of Auditors to investigate the increase in costs for the Garda wastewater treatment plant, which has risen from 130 to 240 million euros. The municipalities oppose the idea of constructing a dual facility in Gavardo and Montichiari to treat sewage, which would discharge into the Chiese River. The delegation of local administrators intends to express their concerns to Prefect Andrea Polichetti, the commissioner overseeing the project.
The meeting among the mayors resulted in the involvement of additional local entities in the united front against the project, emphasizing the importance of environmental protection and the quality of life for residents. The administrators reiterated the need for a strategic environmental assessment and challenged the current approach, which they deem environmentally and technically inadequate. Additionally, a design obstacle has emerged: the European directive mandates that facilities must be powered by renewable sources, but there is no available space in Montichiari for the installation of solar panels.
