The Municipality of Lazise, in collaboration with various agricultural and wine institutions, is organizing an event with an evocative title: “Changing climate… changing viticulture?”. The event will take place on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at Dogana Veneta in Lazise (VR).
During the meeting, several relevant topics related to climate change and its consequences on viticulture will be addressed. The objective is to analyze the current and future impacts of climate change on the Italian wine sector.
The first topic to be explored is the climate evolution in the Veneto region. Data and information on temperature variations, precipitation, and extreme weather events over the years will be presented. This will provide a better understanding of how the climate has changed over time and what the current trends are.
Another crucial aspect to be discussed is the availability of water for Italian vineyards. Climate change has led to increased uncertainty in precipitation, with more frequent drought periods. The event will seek to understand if it is possible to imagine a future for Italian vineyards without adequate water supply and what possible solutions could be.
In relation to the previous topic, the importance of irrigation in viticulture and its impact on grape quality will also be discussed. Different irrigation systems used in the wine sector will be analyzed, and how they can influence the organoleptic characteristics of the wines produced.
The event will also dedicate a space to PIWI, which are grape varieties resistant to fungal diseases. The discussion will cover what PIWI are, their characteristics, and the current situation both in Italy and Europe. Can these new varieties be a solution to cope with the challenges posed by climate change?
Another important topic concerns the management of Flavescenza dorata, a disease that affects vineyards. Considering that climate change can favor the spread of this pathology, it will be crucial to understand how to address it in the future and what strategies to adopt to limit its negative effects on wine production.
During the meeting, there will be an excursion into the Veronese nursery industry, examining its past, present, and future prospects. It will be interesting to understand how this sector has evolved over the years and what challenges it will face in the future.
Finally, a space will be dedicated to the sustainability and quality of the new PIWI varieties in the wine market. The advantages that these varieties can offer from an environmental and productive point of view will be discussed, as well as their reception by consumers.
The event “Changing climate… changing viticulture?” promises to be a unique opportunity to delve into current issues related to the wine sector. Experts in the field will be present to share their knowledge and stimulate reflection on how to tackle the challenges posed by climate change in Italian viticulture.
