A controversy has erupted in Desenzano del Garda regarding the Carpione restocking program, an indigenous species of Lake Garda. Paola Pollini, a regional councilor for the Five Star Movement, has raised doubts about the annual expenditure of €61,000 allocated to this project, arguing that the current strategy is not producing the desired results. Pollini criticizes the Lombardy Region for continuing with a method that involves capturing adult specimens to collect their eggs and hatch them in captivity, stating that it is a waste of public money.
In response to the criticism, Germano Bana of the Brescia Fishermen’s Union defends the work carried out at the regional hatchery in Desenzano. Bana emphasizes that the process of growing and releasing Carpione into the lake is part of a multidimensional strategy necessary to address the severe crisis facing the species, which is considered to be at risk of extinction. While acknowledging the need for further studies, Bana considers the accusations of waste to be exaggerated and highlights the importance of investments to better understand the causes of the Carpione population decline.
