Coregone lavarello: the upcoming recognition as a native species announced. Recently, a significant development has emerged for the fish fauna of Lake Garda: the coregone lavarello will soon be recognized as a native species, allowing the regions to resume restocking the lake’s waters. The announcement was made by Alberto Bozza, a regional councilor from Forza Italia, following a meeting with Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin during the inauguration of the Affi wastewater treatment plant. This meeting, organized by Coldiretti Verona, highlighted the economic importance of lavarello for tourism and the restaurant industry in the area.
The minister welcomed the proposal to eliminate the exemption for the introduction of lavarello, confirming that a political decision has already been made pending approval from the Ministry of Health. In 2022, a Research and Evaluation Unit was established to analyze issues related to fish fauna, and the final report opened the door to regulatory changes concerning lavarello. Additionally, there were discussions about the need for stricter controls on wildlife and the protection of agricultural land from ground-mounted photovoltaic installations.
