The issue of cormorants on Lake Garda has gained international significance thanks to the intervention of the Brescia MEP Mariateresa Vivaldini, who brought the matter to Strasbourg. Vivaldini highlighted the risk of extinction for several fish species, including the Garda carp, marble trout, and chub, due to the excessive presence of cormorants, a protected species that is jeopardizing the balance of aquatic biodiversity. The European Commission has delegated the management of this issue to the member states; however, Vivaldini argues that the current tools are inadequate.
Germano Bana, spokesperson for the Union of Brescia Fishermen, expressed gratitude to Vivaldini for raising the emergency in Parliament, emphasizing the significant losses of valuable fish caused by cormorants. The growing population of these birds poses a concrete threat to the biodiversity of Lake Garda and makes the demand for effective interventions increasingly urgent.
