The high energy costs are once again raising concerns for SMEs in Italy, with a warning issued by Confesercenti, which estimates an additional burden of over 2.6 billion euros for 2025. Small and medium-sized enterprises in the tertiary sector, including commerce, tourism, and services, are expected to face average increases of around 1,300 euros annually for energy bills, which in some cases can account for up to 8-10% of their revenue. Currently, energy prices in Italy are 20% higher than in Germany and 25% higher than in France and Germany, exacerbating an already complex economic situation.
Tensions in energy markets could not only inflate direct costs for SMEs but also negatively impact household consumption. According to Confesercenti, if the situation is not adequately addressed, inflation could exceed 2%, leading to a contraction in household spending of approximately 9.6 billion euros. The association has therefore urged the government to implement corrective measures to mitigate the impact of rising energy bills on economic activities.
