The trial for the death of Gino Zanardini, the deputy commander of the local police in Toscolano, has concluded with the acquittal of all the defendants. The incident occurred in June 2018 when Zanardini was struck by a boulder while conducting an inspection in the Cartiere Valley, following a heavy rainstorm that had hit the area. The defendants were former mayor Delia Maria Castellini, Alessandro Costa, who was the commander of the local police at the time, and Mauro Peruzzi, the head of the municipality’s technical office.
The court acquitted the three defendants with the ruling of “because the fact does not exist,” accepting their defense arguments and rejecting the prosecution’s requests for conviction. The verdict brings an end to a legal case that lasted several years and was closely followed by the local community.
