The Desenzano Film Festival, set to take place from September 27 to 29, is gearing up for its sixth edition, characterized by extensive international participation. The event will be held in some of the most iconic locations in Desenzano del Garda, offering a rich program of short films from around the globe.
A Weekend of Borderless Cinema
This year, the festival has reached a new record with the reception of 1,949 short films from 97 countries, reaffirming its status as a global cinematic event. Only 21 works have been selected for the official screenings, which will take place at the Teatro Alberti and Palazzo Todeschini. Among the distinguished guests are industry professionals such as Abel Ferrara’s editor and a cinematographer known for collaborations with Andrei Tarkovsky.
Theme and Message of the Sixth Edition
The theme chosen for this edition is “In the Gaze of the Other,” a reflection on current global tensions. Matteo Delai, the festival’s artistic director, emphasizes the importance of cinema in overcoming social polarizations through storytelling and the exploration of human experiences. Short films from regions marked by conflict, such as Israel, Palestine, and Ukraine, will be an integral part of the selection.
The Competition: A Showcase for Emerging Talents
The competitive section will feature works in six distinct blocks divided among categories such as Animation, Experimental, Fiction, and Documentaries. Additionally, a specific award will be dedicated to local Lombard productions. Six technical awards will also be presented in various categories such as direction and screenplay.
Palazzo Todeschini will host special screenings on Friday evening, while Teatro Alberti will continue to be the hub of activities throughout the weekend.
Jury of Excellence
The jury for the 2024 edition will consist of established professionals in the Italian film landscape. Notable members include Giuseppe Lanci and Fabio Nunziata, known for their work with renowned directors. Anna Pennella will bring her experience as a casting director and expert film critic.
Collateral Events: Masterclasses and Exhibitions
In addition to screenings, the festival will offer a series of collateral events, including masterclasses led by industry experts. Exhibitions will further enrich the cultural experience of attendees with works exploring the intersections between traditional art and modern technology.
Throughout the weekend, there will also be live musical performances at Teatro Alberti and a party on Saturday night featuring live concerts to entertain guests.
Institutional Support and Sponsors
The festival benefits from the support of the City of Desenzano del Garda and relies on private sponsors who contribute to the realization of the event. Cultural Councillor Pietro Avanzi has highlighted the growing importance of internationality within the event, making it increasingly significant in the Italian cultural context.
With such a varied program and events that stimulate creativity among both spectators and participants, the Desenzano Film Festival confirms its place as one of the leading cinema events on Lake Garda.
