A ghost net over 50 meters long has been recovered off the coast of Vò di Desenzano by the Wwf Bergamo-Brescia. The net, with a mesh size of 22 millimeters typically used for sardine fishing, was already starting to trap fish. This type of equipment is only allowed for authorized professional fishermen; anyone else using it is considered a poacher. The discovery was made following an anonymous report received on Sunday, May 26th.
The phenomenon of ghost nets is not uncommon, and often these nets are intentionally cut and sunk by amateur fishermen as an act of revenge against illegal nets. Paolo Zanollo, a diver and representative of the Wwf for Brescia, emphasized that such actions turn these individuals into “pirates”. The fight against ghost nets also involves the Coast Guard and Provincial Police, who urge anyone who finds illegal nets to report them immediately to enable prompt intervention.
