Feralpi Group recently participated in a significant initiative at the European Parliament aimed at highlighting the crucial role of steel in Europe’s economic growth and resilience. The event, organized by Eurofer, took place from November 19 to 21 and was titled “Steel: at the heart of Europe – Stronger with European Steel.” In this context, Feralpi presented its Interactive Hub, an initiative showcasing an innovative and sustainable model of steelmaking.
The Importance of the Steel Sector
The European steel sector plays a fundamental role in the continental economy, with an annual production of approximately 140 million tons, 500 plants, and over 303,000 direct jobs. Giuseppe Pasini, President of Feralpi Group, emphasized the need for the European Union to place manufacturing, particularly the steel sector, back at the center of its agenda. “It is essential for Europe to remain competitive and continue to create value,” Pasini stated.
Ferrous Scrap as a Critical Raw Material
One of the key points raised by Pasini concerns the management of ferrous scrap. According to him, this resource should be regarded as a critical raw material within the EU and must be protected to prevent it from being exported to economies less attentive to environmental issues. Furthermore, he called for a robust energy policy and the creation of a single energy market with uniform prices across Europe.
Decarbonization and Innovation
Pasini also drew attention to the current challenges related to decarbonization, technological innovation, and the competitiveness of the steel sector. He highlighted that achieving the ambitious CO2 emission reduction targets set by the EU requires an approach based on technological plurality. “All decarbonization levers must be considered and utilized without ideological bias,” he declared.
An Opportunity for the Steel Sector
The event proved to be an important platform for discussing crucial issues concerning the European steel industry with sector representatives and European institutions. Feralpi actively contributed to the organization of the event in collaboration with Massimiliano Salini, Member of the European Parliament.
Visitors had the opportunity to explore the Feralpi Interactive Hub, a multimedia platform designed to present a concrete model of modern steelmaking that combines investments, advanced technologies, and expertise in research and development. This hub provides an in-depth look at how innovations can lead to increasingly sustainable steel production that meets the modern infrastructure needs.
Thus, the initiative represents not only a moment of discussion but also a significant step towards building a more sustainable future for the European steel industry.
