In a recent update to the vaccination schedule, the Province of Trento has decided to extend the free provision of meningococcal B and ACWY vaccines to individuals up to the age of 25. Previously, these vaccines were only free for young people up to 18 years old.
The main objective of this initiative is to improve vaccination coverage among young adults, who are particularly vulnerable to severe infections caused by meningococcus B, such as meningitis and sepsis. This decision was also made following the registration of a case of meningococcal B meningitis in Primiero.
The new vaccination schedule not only extends the free provision of vaccines, but also introduces an active call for meningococcal B vaccination for fifteen-year-olds. This type of call was already in place for the ACWY serotype. The initiative aims to prevent potential epidemics and ensure greater health security for the entire community.
The Province’s decision is based on the favorable opinion of the provincial commission for vaccination strategies and the prevention of infectious diseases. The ultimate goal is to significantly reduce the risk of epidemics through broader coverage of the young adult population.
Citizens are encouraged to take advantage of this free opportunity to get vaccinated, thereby contributing not only to their personal protection but also to the public health of the entire Lake Garda community.
With these new measures, local health authorities hope to further strengthen defenses against serious and often unpredictable infectious diseases caused by meningococcus B and ACWY.
