An important operation by the Carabinieri in Calcinato has led to the arrest of a gang of Neapolitan criminals responsible for numerous scams targeting the elderly in the Basso Garda area. The investigations, initiated after several reports from the victims, have allowed for the identification and apprehension of the five members of the criminal group.
The Scam Method
The fraudsters employed a well-tested method: disguised as Carabinieri officers, they would visit the homes of their victims under the pretext of a fake accident involving a family member. With this excuse, they would convince the victims to hand over cash, which the victims believed was necessary to pay for bail. This scheme has been used at least ten times in recent weeks, primarily targeting the elderly in the area.
Investigations and Arrest
Thanks to footage from surveillance cameras located in the center of Calcinato, the military was able to gather decisive evidence against the gang. The criminals resided in local bed and breakfast establishments and used rental cars to move around the area in order to avoid being easily traced.
Charges and Next Steps
The five individuals who were arrested will now face charges of aggravated fraud in conspiracy, a crime that could result in significant penalties given the seriousness of their actions and the number of victims involved. Local authorities continue to urge citizens to exercise caution, especially when it comes to suspicious requests from strangers or alleged law enforcement representatives.
