The Court of Auditors has raised concerns about the costs of the Garda cycle path, declaring it the most expensive in Italy. According to a recent report, the cost per kilometer is over 1.5 million euros, five times higher than the national average for other cycle paths. In total, the projected costs for the entire 144-kilometer route exceed one billion euros, a significant increase from the 194 million initially estimated in 2017.
The project involves the Autonomous Province of Trento as the lead authority and also extends into Lombardy and Veneto. The Court of Auditors’ report highlights safety issues and technical characteristics of the route, with particular attention to the overhanging sections over the lake in the northern part. Furthermore, the Technical Economic Feasibility Project (Pfte) was deemed lacking in terms of the landscape and environmental investigations necessary for an accurate quantification of costs.
