The Garda cycle path, an ambitious project aiming to connect the entire lake through a scenic bicycle track, is also taking shape in the municipality of Salò. The route was presented in detail during the City Council meeting and will cover the entire stretch from Puegnago to Gardone Riviera.
Unlike other cities where major construction works are needed to create the cycle path, in Salò it mainly involves making the track recognizable through horizontal and vertical signage. However, the works will not start immediately after the formal handover, which took place on March 18th, but will be postponed after the summer to avoid disruptions to traffic during the tourist season. The works are expected to last about three months and will take place approximately between September and November.
The cycle path will enter Salò from the south through Via Santa Caterina (the road of the Colombaro golf course in Cunettone), pass through the roundabout at the top of Zette and join Via del Panorama, where the “Ugo Gagliardi” cycle path already runs. From there, it will continue towards Campoverde along Via Chiesa, then leave the hamlet passing in front of the Benaco pharmacy and continue along Via Gasparo da Salò until reaching Fossa.
Subsequently, the route will continue towards Carmine along Via Brunati and reach the border with Gardone through Via Cure del Lino, Viale Landi, and 45 bis. In the opposite direction, from Gardone to Puegnago, cyclists will follow the same route except for a short stretch in the historic center that will pass through Via Garibaldi, 4 Novembre, and De Gasperi.
City Councilor Cipani emphasized that the cycle path will mainly consist of shared bike-car lanes, indicated by discontinuous white lines. This won’t change much considering that there has already been a speed limit of 30 km/h in the center of Salò for several years. These are roads where cyclists are already present, but shared lanes will be specifically marked.
It is interesting to note how the municipal administration managed to avoid the risk of having the cycle path pass through the center of Salò, along Via San Carlo, Via Butturini, and along the lakeside. The mayor also stated that the stretch between Gardone and Limone is not a priority and they oppose the idea because it would be like having cyclists ride along the Amalfi Coast.
