Gardaland SEA LIFE Aquarium has recently joined the European Studbook Foundation (ESF), a non-profit organization based in the Netherlands dedicated to the conservation of endangered animal species. This membership has led to the arrival of a young male zebra shark (Stegostoma tigrinum), a threatened species that now swims in the aquarium tanks.
Guests of the aquarium will have the opportunity to choose the name of the new arrival through a social media survey and an on-site form. The final choice will be announced on July 14th, on Shark Awareness Day, the global day dedicated to sharks.
Gardaland SEA LIFE Aquarium’s commitment to ocean conservation and the preservation of marine species is well known. The goal is to raise awareness among visitors about the importance of protecting marine ecosystems through educational and entertaining experiences. This approach, called “edutainment,” allows visitors to learn about marine life while having fun.
Joining the European Studbook Foundation allows the aquarium to actively contribute to the conservation of zebra sharks. Animals registered in the ESF’s genealogical registry are closely monitored to ensure genetically healthy offspring, thus increasing the chances of the species’ survival.
The zebra shark is known for its unique coloration, which changes with age: the stripes on the bodies of young specimens transform into spots as they grow. Their long caudal fin gives them a unique elegance while swimming.
However, this species is subject to numerous anthropogenic threats, especially in the coastal areas of Southeast Asia where intensive fishing has led to a drastic reduction in the wild population. In particular, trawling in the Gulf of Papua causes significant accidental catches.
The young zebra shark welcomed by Gardaland SEA LIFE Aquarium already measures 140 cm and lives in an 850,000-liter ocean tank with other species such as blacktip reef sharks and nurse sharks. Sabrina Repetto, the aquarium’s curator, emphasizes the importance of the project: “We hope that in a few years, he will be ready to mate with a female of his species.”
To further engage the public, the aquarists invite visitors to propose names for the sharklet through a dedicated form or by participating in the social media survey. The chosen name will be officially announced on July 14th during World Shark Day.
Gardaland SEA LIFE Aquarium remains open every day from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm; tickets can be purchased online at reduced rates of €10.50 or full price at €12.50.
