Gardaland SEA LIFE Aquarium recently participated in the 24 Hour Global Beach Clean, a global initiative aimed at combating plastic pollution. This year, 50 volunteers dedicated their time to collect waste along the shores of Lake Garda, contributing nearly 18 kg of non-biodegradable materials.
A Collective Commitment Against Pollution
The event was organized by Merlin Entertainments and SEA LIFE TRUST, with the goal of mobilizing people worldwide to protect the oceans and marine life. In the previous edition, nearly 3,000 kg of waste was collected globally. For 2023, the organizers hope to surpass this milestone.
The Global Beach Clean saw active participation from volunteers from various countries, including locations such as New Zealand and California. During the activities, particularly unusual items such as banners and bicycle frames were also discovered.
Local Participation and Institutional Support
Gardaland SEA LIFE Aquarium invited its staff to join the initiative, involving family and friends as well. The cleaning day took place from 3:30 PM to 6:00 PM, with significant attendance from local authorities. Among the participants were Davide Sandrini, the mayor of Castelnuovo, and Domenico Pagnotta, the Lake Garda Territory Councillor.
The Importance of Environmental Awareness
Each year, it is estimated that around 8 million tons of plastic end up in the world’s oceans. The situation is critical; it is predicted that by 2050, the oceans could contain more plastic than fish. In this context, initiatives like the Global Beach Clean represent an important opportunity to raise public awareness about the urgency of environmental issues.
Gardaland SEA LIFE Aquarium is constantly dedicated to educating visitors about the preservation of the marine environment through educational experiences and outdoor events that engage both employees and local communities.
