The General Assembly of the Grana Padano Protection Consortium has reported a positive outlook for 2023, with an increase in exports and improved prices. During the assembly, there were also elections for the Board of Directors and the Board of Auditors.
The outgoing president, Renato Zaghini, highlighted that in 2024, it is expected that sales volumes abroad will surpass those in Italy. In 2023, in fact, the revenue from foreign consumption has already exceeded that of Italy, reaching almost €1.95 billion compared to €1.65 billion in Italy. This means that global consumers have spent nearly €3.7 billion to purchase Grana Padano, with a 16% increase compared to 2022.
From 1998 to 2023, Grana Padano production has increased by 66.87%, with a 4.84% increase compared to 2022. The province of Mantova has been the most productive territory, accounting for 30.36% of the total production.
In the Italian market (Retail), the category of “Typical Italian Hard Cheeses” has experienced a growth of 4.8% compared to 2022. Grana Padano remains the leader in the category, along with Trentingrana, with a market share of 45.2%. The average price of Grana Padano DOP has increased by 8.9%, reaching €14.68 per kilogram.
Regarding exports, in 2023, exports of Grana Padano DOP have increased by 6.55%, with 48.4% of the production destined for foreign markets. Europe represents 83% of the exports, with Germany being the main recipient with a total of 599,448 wheels. Non-EU28 markets have also seen an increase of 5.14%, thanks to the strong performance of the US market.
President Zaghini emphasized the importance of continuing to focus on exports without neglecting the domestic Italian market. He also highlighted the need to follow consumer trends, focusing on the sustainability of production processes and animal welfare.
The Assembly unanimously approved the report of the Board of Directors and the final balance sheet. Elections were also held for the new Board of Directors and the Board of Auditors.
