Desenzano del Garda is facing a critical situation regarding the allocation of public housing, with an extremely imbalanced supply-demand ratio. According to data released on June 5, 2024, there were 134 applications for only 3 available apartments in the municipality, with 40 requests coming from families in absolute poverty. The situation is no better in neighboring municipalities: Lonato has 128 applications for 2 accommodations, and Salò has 94 applications for 3 houses. This trend highlights a severe housing emergency in the Garda area.
In the overall Garda area, which includes 22 municipalities such as Bedizzole and Valvestino, the availability of housing is dramatically low, with only about thirty units becoming available this year. The housing crisis is exacerbated by phenomena such as gentrification and touristicification, which make access to the private real estate market even more difficult. Desenzano is classified as a “red zone” due to its high housing demand, while other municipalities like Salò and Lonato are in the “orange zone”. This situation calls for urgent interventions to address the ever-increasing demand for affordable public housing.
