In anticipation of the European and municipal elections scheduled for June 8th and 9th, 2024, the Electoral Services Directorate of the Department for Internal and Territorial Affairs of the Ministry of the Interior has announced the start of the electoral silence from midnight on Friday, June 7th. This period of silence is regulated by Article 1, paragraph 3, letter b), of Decree-Law No. 7/2024, which establishes specific restrictions on propaganda activities.
During the voting weekend, from Saturday, June 8th to Sunday, June 9th, all forms of direct or indirect electoral propaganda will be prohibited. This includes public rallies, meetings in public places, and new displays of propaganda material such as printed materials and posters. These measures are implemented to ensure a peaceful environment free from external influences during the electoral process.
In addition, according to Article 9 of Law No. 212 of April 4th, 1956, any form of electoral propaganda is also prohibited within a radius of 200 meters from the entrance of the polling stations on the days designated for voting. This provision aims to prevent pressure on voters in the immediate vicinity of the polling stations.
Respecting the electoral silence is crucial to ensure a proper expression of the popular will at the ballot box, avoiding that the final moments before voting are influenced by aggressive campaigns or propaganda messages.
