Fishermen from Lake Garda are making an urgent appeal for the resumption of coregone (whitefish) stocking, a species vital to the local economy and currently in serious decline. Since 2021, restocking has been prohibited as it is considered non-native, yet local professionals report a drastic reduction in catches, with an 80% loss compared to pre-ban levels. Without immediate intervention, they warn that the tradition of professional fishing could disappear within two to three years.
During a meeting in Manerba, the 96 fishermen present discussed mobilization strategies to raise public awareness and engage institutions. Among the proposals are signature campaigns and demonstrations, as well as requests for designated no-navigation zones to protect fish habitats. Support has also come from the Cisl union and the Municipality of Manerba, but the fishermen are awaiting concrete responses to ensure the future of their livelihoods.
