The Lonato wastewater treatment plant is at the center of a new initiative aimed at improving the purification of Lake Garda, as confirmed by the extraordinary commissioner for wastewater treatment, Prefect Andrea Polichetti. During a meeting held on December 11, the design of a centralized facility in Lonato was approved, dismissing the option of a treatment plant in Peschiera due to its technical limitations and high costs. The new plan also includes maintaining the discharge into the Chiese River, which will ensure the reuse of water for agriculture over more than 2,000 hectares.
The choice of Lonato is based on economic and environmental considerations, with an estimated savings of around 16 million euros in the construction of the works and 3 million euros annually in the future management of the facility. Additionally, the decommissioning of the currently used sublacual pipeline is considered urgent due to its deterioration. The construction of the plant will employ advanced technologies to minimize environmental and noise impacts, while also ensuring an improvement in the quality of the treated water.
