On Sunday afternoon, at the Campanello beach in Castelnuovo del Garda, a situation of alert occurred that required the intervention of law enforcement. A fight between two boys was promptly interrupted thanks to the timely arrival of the police and carabinieri, dispersing the groups of young people present.
In addition to the brawl, another boy fell into the water, possibly pushed by someone. The exact causes are not clear: some claim that he was drunk, while others believe that he couldn’t swim and had difficulty due to the still cold water temperature. Fortunately, the young man was rescued and taken to the emergency room without suffering serious consequences.
These incidents have brought to mind the disorders that occurred in past years, with a significant peak on June 2, 2022. Every year, starting from mid-May weekends, there are “pilgrimages” of groups of young people from different provinces such as Verona, Brescia, Bergamo, and Milan. The massive presence increases the risk of disorders.
A witness reported that on Sunday afternoon, “they were fighting; we called the carabinieri and four patrols arrived along with riot police.” Another person present emphasized how the situation is similar to previous years but fortunately without acts of vandalism this time.
The mayor of Castelnuovo del Garda, Giovanni Dal Cero, stated that private surveillance has already been activated on weekends. However, the beach is not yet fully equipped with umbrellas and sunbeds due to the unstable weather. The mayor is considering more drastic measures to avoid further problems on the piers along the beach.
“I’m thinking of prohibiting access to the piers,” Dal Cero said. This decision may be necessary to prevent confusion and future accidents. Additionally, the mayor hopes that this year the prefect will convene the provincial committee for public order and safety in anticipation of the summer season.
Orietta Gaiulli, the mayor of Peschiera del Garda, has also taken preemptive measures by sending a PEC (certified email) to the prefects and police chiefs of the main neighboring cities to request increased controls at train stations and beach access points. According to Gaiulli, there must be a continuous alert, especially in anticipation of June 2 and throughout the summer season.
