A gas explosion struck Montichiari on Thursday evening, causing severe damage to two homes and leaving a 39-year-old man in critical condition. The blast was triggered by a gas leak from a kitchen cylinder while the man was attempting to assist a Ghanaian family residing in the building, who were dispersing the gas into the air. Mayor Marco Togni emphasized the fortunate absence of fatalities, while the 39-year-old, known in the theater community, was admitted to Niguarda Hospital in Milan with burns covering a quarter of his body and serious injuries.
Following the incident, technicians conducted structural checks on the affected buildings, declaring most of the apartments safe for habitation. Only the two most damaged homes and the commercial premises on the ground floor remained uninhabitable. Residents were allowed to return to their homes after the gas was restored yesterday afternoon. One of the children from the Ghanaian family was also transferred to the same hospital as the 39-year-old, but their condition is reported to be less severe.
