Multiart, the first Italian application designed to make artworks accessible to the visually impaired, celebrates its first year of operation with significant new developments. This app, which has already attracted thousands of users in Italy and around the world, offers an innovative interface that transforms images into sounds and music, allowing those who cannot see to experience art in a unique way.
The project was conceived by the Brescia-based collective The DouglaS MortimerS, composed of local artists such as Fabio Rebuschi, Mauro Maisel Zuliani, and Igor Costanzo. Developed with the support of local sponsors and the guidance of industry experts, Multiart is available for both iOS and Android in 170 countries and in five different languages: Italian, English, German, French, and Spanish.
Main Features of the App
The distinctive feature of Multiart is its ability to capture images using the smartphone’s camera. Once an image is captured—whether it be a famous artwork or an everyday object—the application employs a proprietary algorithm to transform it into an original musical composition. This process is based on the association between colors and sounds: each image is analyzed pixel by pixel to generate a unique melody.
The algorithm developed by Fabio Rebuschi allows for practically infinite combinations; masterpieces by artists such as Van Gogh or Matisse can thus “speak” through their personalized melodies. The team is currently working on version 2.0 of the application, which promises advanced features and a significant graphic overhaul.
Strategic Collaborations
An important new feature in the upcoming update is the partnership with Mariano Galizia of Hostinnova, a company specializing in artificial intelligence. The shared goal is to create a tool accessible to all users, including those with visual or motor disabilities. The new features will include voice recordings of poems and personal reflections from users, fostering the creation of a true digital community where artistic experiences can be shared.
Additionally, social tools are planned that will allow users to interact with one another through comments or private messages on shared artworks within the app.
An Inaugural Tour on the Lake
To celebrate the app’s first anniversary, a special event was held at Agriturismo 30 in Moniga del Garda, launching a promotional tour around the lake. During this inaugural evening, musicians such as Stefano Zeni and Marco Remondini performed alongside artistic works presented by Mauro Maisel. These live performances created a magical atmosphere where digital art and live music harmoniously blended.
The tour will continue throughout the spring with additional scheduled stops at various locations around the lake.
Multiart thus represents a significant innovation in the landscape of applications dedicated to artistic accessibility; it not only offers opportunities for the visually impaired but also engages anyone who wishes to explore the world of art through new expressive means.
