The national assembly of Confesercenti took place in Rome, featuring the participation of President Sergio Mattarella and an unexpected surprise: a blessing message from Pope Francis. This event served as an important opportunity to discuss the future of neighborhood commerce, which is essential for the Italian economy.
During the meeting, coordinated by national president Patrizia de Luise, speakers included the Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance Maurizio Leo, the president of CNEL Renato Brunetta, and numerous political representatives. Mattarella emphasized the importance of small businesses, describing them as “the backbone of the Nation’s economy.” He expressed gratitude towards this network for the support provided during the pandemic and reiterated the need to support commercial establishments as a “security presence” in local areas.
The Situation of Neighborhood Commerce
The central theme of the assembly was encapsulated in the slogan “widespread enterprise as the engine of economic development and the wealth and security of territories.” Crucial topics regarding the current state of small and medium enterprises in the sectors of commerce, tourism, and services were addressed. In particular, discussions focused on the challenges posed by government measures in the Budget Law and the crisis affecting neighborhood shops.
A comprehensive study presented by EURES revealed alarming data about the commercial situation in Italy. In recent years, tens of thousands of businesses have closed in small municipalities; among the most affected categories are adult clothing stores (-31%) and bars (-52%). This ongoing decline seriously threatens access to essential services for local communities.
Proposals for the Future
In response to this crisis, President De Luise put forward two significant proposals: the implementation of an anti-desertification flat tax to encourage new openings in disadvantaged areas and the introduction of a web tax on major online sales giants. According to estimates, a 1% tax on online transactions could generate over 450 million euros annually.
Additionally, Confesercenti has called on politicians to pay greater attention to local commerce. This sector not only serves as a vital space for social interaction but also contributes to the safety of urban centers and the maintenance of community spirit.
Message from the Pope
At the conclusion of the assembly, a video message from the Pope was screened, in which he extended greetings to Confesercenti and the world of commerce. In his address, Pope Francis emphasized the importance of balancing work and family life, highlighting values that resonate deeply within the context of Italian small businesses.
