An initiative promoted by RUNiPace, the Network of Italian Universities for Peace, has led to the creation of an innovative national doctoral program in Peace Studies. This program involves 34 Italian universities, including the University of Padua with its University Center for Human Rights “Antonio Papisca” and the UNESCO Chair on Human Rights, Democracy, and Peace.
The coordination of the doctoral program is entrusted to Professor Alessandro Saggioro of Sapienza University of Rome, who also serves as the lead university. In total, there are 41 positions available, of which 36 include a scholarship.
The doctoral program in Peace Studies is a concrete response by Italian universities to the growing global challenges: from wars to emerging nationalisms, from the crisis of the rule of law to the increase in inequalities and gender-based violence. The participating academic institutions aim to develop interdisciplinary higher education on peace, human rights, and conflict.
The initiative is part of a dynamic international context, closely collaborating with intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations already active in the field. This approach aims to promote an inclusive and sustainable society through advanced research and the practical application of acquired skills.
The program offers ten different curricula:
1. Technology, sustainability, and peace
2. Identity, memories, religions, and peace
3. Peacebuilding, human rights, and peoples’ rights
4. Peace education and migrations
5. Architectures and landscapes of peace
6. Space, territories, resources, and narratives from a peace perspective
7. Economics of peace
8. Literature, arts, philosophies, and imaginaries of peace
9. Restorative justice, transitional justice, and nonviolent conflict transformation
10. Dynamics, processes, and actors in international relations
Candidates must specify their chosen curriculum in the application.
