The Lake Operational Unit of the Milano Coast Guard has been officially established to ensure greater navigational safety on the lakes of Garda, Maggiore, and Como. The decree, signed by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Matteo Salvini, at the proposal of the General Commander of the Port Authorities – Coast Guard, Admiral Nicola Carlone, stipulates that the new unit will coordinate activities already carried out by the teams present in the lake areas. The operational headquarters will be in Milan and will report to the Maritime Directorate of Liguria.
The Unit will play a central role in coordinating search and rescue operations, as well as ensuring rigorous controls regarding recreational navigation safety. With its establishment, the aim is to optimize the efficiency of the service without burdening state finances, ensuring a timely response to emergencies through the Lake Rescue Sub Center – LRSC. Salvini emphasized that this represents a significant step towards the protection of lake territories and the safety of those who operate and reside there.
