Cholesterol is a fatty substance essential for the proper functioning of the human body, but if LDL (bad cholesterol) lipoproteins are present in excessive amounts, they can deposit on the walls of the arteries, causing atherosclerosis. This phenomenon can lead to the formation of plaques that obstruct blood flow, thus increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
Cardiovascular diseases are currently the leading cause of death in Italy, with over 220,000 deaths each year. In Lombardy, deaths from circulatory system diseases exceed 35,000 cases annually. The main cardiovascular risk factor is the increase in LDL cholesterol, also known as bad cholesterol.
