The new fishing regulations for Lake Garda have come into effect, as published in the Official Bulletin of the Lombardy Region. Among the main changes is the introduction of the “catch card” and the fishing logbook, tools designed to monitor catches and the presence of anglers. The rules also establish specific prohibitions for different species: for instance, the whitefish cannot be fished from December 1 to January 31, while the sardine has a limit of 40 specimens with a minimum length of 15 cm.
However, the new regulations have sparked controversy among members of the working group coordinated by the Garda Community. Requests for greater protection of the lake’s ecosystem, such as increasing the minimum size for pike and better management of nets in the water, were not accepted. Filippo Gavazzoni, vice president of the group, expressed regret over the lack of more decisive measures and emphasized that a bolder approach would have been necessary to address the issues related to biodiversity and the decline of fish biomass in the lake.
