The 2024 budget law has introduced significant changes to parental leave, increasing the allowance from 30% to 60% of salary for an additional month. This extra month can be taken within the sixth year of the child’s life or within six years from the child’s adoption or foster care placement.
But the news doesn’t end there: in 2024 alone, the allowance for this additional month is set at 80% of salary instead of 60%. In practice, parents who decide to take parental leave will be entitled to two months of leave paid at 80% of their salary.
It is important to note that the second month of leave can only be taken by employed parents if they complete mandatory maternity or paternity leave after December 31, 2023. This provision aims to provide greater flexibility in choosing the timing and mode of leave.
However, starting in 2025, the allowance for the second month will again decrease to 60%. It is therefore advisable to carefully consider the possibility of taking the second month of leave in the coming year.
Regarding the implementation of these new provisions, the National Social Security Institute (INPS) has published Circular 17/2024, which provides all the necessary administrative and operational instructions.
