A recent decision by the Municipality of Desenzano del Garda has sparked a heated debate among residents and visitors of the area. The local administration has decided to install horizontal no-parking signs along the Cesare Battisti lakeside promenade in an attempt to combat illegal parking that plagues the historic center.
Starting yesterday, several signs have appeared near Porto Vecchio and Piazza Matteotti to reinforce an existing prohibition, indicated by vertical signage. Some consider this move necessary, given the constant presence of parked vehicles in pedestrian areas and along the lakeside. However, there have been criticisms regarding the visual and aesthetic impact that these signs have on one of the most characteristic and beloved areas of the city center.
The issue has quickly caught the attention of citizens, many of whom have expressed their opinions on the Facebook group “La nostra Desenzano.” Some argue that it would have been more effective to increase enforcement and proceed with the removal of illegally parked vehicles, rather than adding more horizontal signs. Several testimonies report that in the past 24 hours, some cars have been parked right on top of these new signs without any consequences.
Another aspect to consider is the use of the area for loading/unloading operations and parking for vehicles with disabled permits. These activities also take place in Piazza Cappelletti and often involve residents or tourists who prefer to avoid paid parking lots available in the center.
The municipality’s initiative aims to protect public pedestrian spaces but will have to grapple with the challenge of balancing practical and aesthetic needs in one of the most frequented locations on Lake Garda.
