The Regional Council of Lombardy has approved a new hygienic-sanitary regulation for pet cemeteries, in accordance with Regional Law No. 20 of October 21, 2022. This initiative, proposed by Welfare Councillor Guido Bertolaso, aims to establish technical and operational requirements for the management of cemeteries and incineration facilities for companion animals. The act will now be submitted to the mandatory opinion of the relevant Council Commission, marking a significant step forward in the protection of pets.
The regulation provides detailed guidelines on the procedures for burial, exhumation, and the decommissioning of cemetery sites, ensuring compliance with hygiene and safety standards. Among the included specifications are instructions on the registration of carcasses and ashes, as well as the necessary requirements for the construction and expansion of facilities. According to Bertolaso, this regulation represents a concrete commitment from the Region to ensure dignity for animals even in their final phase of life, thereby reaffirming Lombardy’s leadership in this ever-evolving sector.
