The repopulation of the lavarello whitefish in the waters of Lake Garda is scheduled for 2025, as announced by regional councilor Alessandro Beduschi. This initiative comes after years of controversy surrounding the ban on the introduction of new eggs, imposed by the Ministry of Ecological Transition, which has led to a gradual decline in the population of this species. Local fishermen have strongly criticized this decision, as the lavarello was a significant part of their catch and the region’s gastronomic heritage.
In the coming months, the Lombardy Region is expected to reactivate the introduction of lavarello fry, in agreement with Veneto and Trentino, to initiate a scientific study aimed at recognizing the species as semi-native. Additionally, a funding program of 900,000 euros has been announced to support professional fishermen, encouraging new investments in the fishing sector, thereby promoting sustainable fishing and the revival of a vital industry for the local economy.
