A new sinkhole has opened between Lonato and Desenzano, marking the fourth collapse in two years around the high-speed railway tunnel. The incident, which occurred on the night of Tuesday, September 6, 2024, created a hole approximately 100 meters in diameter near San Cipriano, forcing technicians to intervene with 200 cubic meters of concrete to seal the area. The depth of the sinkhole is estimated to be around ten meters at its most critical points.
This event raises concerns about the stability of the €204 million project, which is one of the most complex undertakings of the Brescia-Verona high-speed railway. Although there were no injuries and the tunnel did not collapse, the repeated ground subsidence indicates potential structural issues that require attention. Previous incidents occurred in January 2022 and November 2023, when other sinkholes were already reported in the same area.
