The recent local elections in Sirmione, held on June 8th and 9th, saw the reconfirmation of Mayor Lavelli by a very narrow margin of votes. However, the defeated candidates, Marcello Bertoldi and Roberto Campagnola, have decided to file an appeal with the Administrative Court (Tar) due to alleged irregularities during the voting process.
Roberto Campagnola has highlighted several procedural flaws in the minutes of the six polling stations. According to reports, the irregularities include improperly sealed ballot boxes, discrepancies between the number of ballots cast and the number of actual voters, and the use of unsuitable voting tools, such as non-copying pencils. “The irregularities that occurred are objective and easily verifiable from the minutes,” said Campagnola.
After an internal discussion among all the candidates on the list, except for three who were absent from Sirmione but still in favor of the appeal, the decision to proceed legally was made. The aim of the appeal is to ensure transparency in the elections and respect the will of the voters. Now, we will have to wait about a month and a half to know the verdict of the Administrative Court. If the appeal is successful, the municipality will be temporarily placed under the administration of a commissioner until new elections scheduled for 2025.
Marcello Bertoldi reiterated that the purpose of the appeal is not to destabilize the municipal administration but to verify the regularity of the electoral operations. He emphasized that the errors observed at the polling stations are numerous and can significantly influence the final results given the narrow margin of votes between the candidates.
