New edition of “History in First Person”, the series of historical popularization curated by Prof. Marco Cuzzi of the Department of Historical Studies at the University of Milan, promoted by the Department of Culture and the “Arturo Sigurtà” Library of Castiglione delle Stiviere, this year dedicated to the contemporary history of Europe.
“We thought that in light of the important electoral deadline for the European Parliament on June 8th and 9th, it would be extremely useful to offer citizens an additional level of knowledge and awareness about our continent, its contemporary historical characteristics, and its unitary processes. A way of conceiving historical popularization not only as a cultural event but also as a tool for a more active and aware citizenship,” emphasizes Enrico Volpi, Mayor of Castiglione.
And Prof. Marco Cuzzi specifies: “The history of Europe does not begin with Maastricht or with the birth of the European Economic Community. Those are the final appointments of an ancient path that dates back to the dawn of civilizations, which goes through the seasons of multinational empires and nationalism, and reaches the twentieth century. A path characterized by the dream of many enlightened minds, perhaps visionary, which culminated in the great European wars of the twentieth century. From that immense massacre, from that European civil war, the idea of a great integration among nations emerged. The common root of the experience is the struggle for the freedom of the peoples of the old continent, which has given our common European homeland its deepest nature as a homeland of the rights of every citizen. We will try to tell the journey that led to all this in the last hundred years.”
And Massimo Lucchetti, Assessor for Culture, concludes: “With this new edition, we have definitively established an appointment that is now recognized and highly appreciated in the city and beyond, which characterizes our cultural policy. Another piece, together with the Sociale Theater, Palazzo Menghini, and the summer music festival, that makes Castiglione a point of attraction and reference for the entire area of Northern Mantua.”
The schedule of events includes the first appointment on Saturday, May 4th at 3:00 PM at Palazzo Pastore with the lecture dedicated to “Europe after the Great War.” Other meetings include Saturday, May 11th at 10:30 AM on “European Thought in the Interwar Period,” Saturday, June 1st at 10:30 AM on “From the Slavery of Europe to the Resistance,” and concludes on Friday, June 7th at 6:30 PM with “The Early Stages of European Integration.”
